03:24:43 Prof. Zubin Sethna: You're very welcome Kunal.....lovely to have you here with us. 03:25:44 Rosalind Jones: thank you for your comments Kunal! 03:35:48 David Hansen: Venture Capital is a major factor here. VC firms like to invest in tech companies because they get acquired more often. So there are more acquisitions in part because there are more vc-backed firms to acquire. It's a self-reinforcing feedback loop 03:36:28 Devkamal Dutta: Thank you, David - that's a great example. Very insightful! 03:49:57 David Hansen: so you are looking at only tech companies being acquired? 03:51:23 David Hansen: perhaps a control is the availability of funding for acquisition 03:52:03 David Hansen: between different types of companies or industries 03:56:22 Kunal Sevak: No, David, we are looking at all. My point was just that Wal-Mart is also a contender for acquiring digital companies Yes, funding for companies would be a good control variable. Thanks! 03:57:26 David Hansen: how much capital does Wal-Mart have access to for acquisition compared to Amazon, for example? 03:59:23 David Hansen: when you get beyond those major companies, then I think the differences are going to be more substantial. For example, a grocery chain will likely have less access to the capital needed to acquire other companies compared to a tech company like Blackbaud (a local company that has acquired many) 04:01:35 Kunal Sevak: Yes, it could be a good variable to explore. But the question is not about money. The question is "whom would a local grocery chain acquire? For what purpose? On the other hand, Blackbaud might have tremendous incentive for acquisition due to the technological aspects" 04:01:38 David Hansen: access also includes proximity. Amazon and Google will be closer physically and personally to VC and investment banking, than say Publix supermarkets, with their HQ in Florida outside of Tampa 04:01:50 Kunal Sevak: That is just an assumption 04:02:31 David Hansen: grocery would want to acquire anything that might help them survive an extremely competitive market with tiny profit margins 04:03:06 Kunal Sevak: I would love to discuss this further in a private chat later 04:07:32 Luca Breit: There is a paper "The role of effectual networking in small business Marketing" from 2019. Not sure if it was in your presentation. Maybe its useful for further development 04:09:29 Prof. Zubin Sethna: you may also look at work from Eleanor Shaw 04:09:32 SEBASTIAN ROBLEDO GIRALDO: Awesome! Thanks ! 04:09:46 Aodheen McCartan: And Rosalind Jones! 04:10:21 SEBASTIAN ROBLEDO GIRALDO: Great feedback, we really appreciate it :-) 04:12:49 David Hansen: I have to go now. I have another meeting starting soon. Hopefully it's short and I can come back before this finishes. If not, it was great seeing many friends as well as meeting some new people. If anyone wants to get in touch with me my email is hansend@cofc.edu. 04:13:13 Rosalind Jones: take care Dave 04:13:30 Vincent Pascal: Thanks for your input! 04:14:15 drpatts: Great to see you Dave!! 04:19:22 Prof. Zubin Sethna: Aodheen - interesting. Question...is the age of the owner-manager in these micro/small firms of significance and a contributory factor to the decision to outsource or not? 04:21:00 Philip Alford: Very interesting area of research Aodheen. A ‘state of the market’ study would also be interesting to establish how many small firms are currently outsourcing digital and in what areas. 04:22:00 Prof. Zubin Sethna: Also, that question about the 'right balance'....may well be driven (at the moment) by the lack of finance available to small firms.....and compounded further by the small firm not recognising the ROI of getting professional help by outsourcing. 04:24:26 Devkamal Dutta: The strategic orientation literature might come in very useful to differentiate between small firms that go to an agency with a strategic approach versus those that don't. 04:25:05 shariworthington: If you’re querying agencies, have you considered tapping into Hubspot and their network? Sometimes they work directing with small firms; other times they go through small agencies. 04:25:12 jhill’s iPad: It’s like the latter day promotional brochure. In many SME’s, particularly early stage businesses, they do tend to be reactive so the context is different but behaviour remains the same. Great study focus though and good to ‘virtually’ see you Aodheen! 04:34:01 Rosalind Jones: really great Aodheen, good to see practical help for small businesses. 04:35:30 drpatts: Aoodheen, Very good and well-structured insights into both sides of Agencies and Small Firms around Digital Marketing 04:36:48 Jersson Casasbuenas: Great feedback, we really appreciate it 04:37:36 Jersson Casasbuenas: Thank you very much Jersson Casasbuenas - Colombia 04:41:39 Rosalind Jones: the lone digital tourism entrepreneur Tourism Management Alford & Jones 2020 earlycite 04:43:32 Prof. Zubin Sethna: Yep - in a recent convo with an owner manager, she mentioned that with the proliferation of 'specialist marketing agencies' popping up all over the place, it is difficult to ascertain the expertise one is paying for.....unless of course it comes via WoM. 04:45:16 Rosalind Jones: technology-in-practice theory really helped inform our study 04:46:29 Gerard Martorell: Good work Aodheen!!! 04:47:00 Rosalind Jones: go hugh! the midnight cowboy 04:59:01 Aodheen McCartan: Thanks for all your helpful questions and comments everyone. I have adopted a very low-tech method of capturing them - writing in my notebook! 04:59:53 Rosalind Jones: they're brilliant I stayed there and their communications are brilliant 05:09:13 Fernando D'Andrea: I am curious to try to understand how Martech could be used BEFORE product launch, whenever the (would be) entrepreneur is trying to figure out what market to try to serve and how. have you guys thought about that? 05:09:48 Fernando D'Andrea: That would connect to our discussion yesterday, from a strategic marketing perspective, instead of a marketing management one. 05:15:20 Aodheen McCartan: That framework that you are talking about Philip would be such a contribution. 05:16:37 Philip Alford: Maybe more of set of guidelines as each business will be a very unique case 05:17:16 Gerard Martorell: But I am worried that this framework is a moving one. Therefore, you might get the picture today but it might not be the good one tomorrow... 05:17:49 shariworthington: Good point, Gerard. The tools change so rapidly. Maybe strategic best practices is a way to look at it more broadly? 05:22:15 Prof. Zubin Sethna: So GRCME 2020 comes to an end. Thank you everyone for your participation, presentations, and presence of mind with such great intellectual stimulation. It's been a real treat to see 'old' friends and make new friends. It’s a unique platform that combines the aspects of the various online platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or BB Collaborate, with a second dimension, space, which allows participants to move around and interact in smaller groups. So, it’s a bit like the usual social, but in the virtual space. 05:27:31 shariworthington: Cool, David! What time? 05:27:31 NASSER AL-QAHTANI: It's always fun and fruitful to join you guys. Many thanks! 05:34:12 Prof. Zubin Sethna: there's that word PIVOT again!!!! 05:34:32 shariworthington: It’s all through my dissertation, too.
